Clue 1: Barcelona Chair, desgined by Mies Van der Rohe, it was designed for the german pavilion for the International Exposition of 1929

Clue 2: This is the Red and Blue chair by Garrit Rietveld, it was originally designed to be black, white and gray but was later changed to primary colors to mimic Piet Mondrians paintings.  I am reading Azure architecture magazine.

Clue 3: The Wexner Center by Peter Eisenman, I learned that the building had to have repairs only a few years after it was built due to a leaking roof.  The building was not designed to keep water out very well.

Clue 4: The math tower by Philip Johnson, the architectural detail that I thought was interesting was the tile surrounding the massive arch around the entrance
Clue 5: The Thompson library, The library has been expanded and renovated 3 times since it was first built in 1910 by architects Allen and Collins

Our classes on Monday and Wednesday this week were pretty good.  The information I learned in the slideshow was important but I felt that the video really drove home the point that was trying to be made in class.  Seeing how happy that woman was when she tried out the new wheelchair design was really cool to see.  The whole reason for design is that you are helping people out making things more easy for their way of life.  The video was my favorite part of class on Monday.  Wednesday was a good class also.  I really enjoyed getting to know the people in my group a lot better.  I also just had fun walking around campus and noticing things I noramally wouldnt have.  I also learned a lot about the buildings of campus that I wouldn't have known otherwise.

I found this reading not as interesting as the last section. However, it did have a lot of good information.  In chapter 7, one thing that I found very interesting was the dispute over how the new versions of the British Telecom phonebooths would be designed.  I think their new design is very boring and could have done a better job reflecting the previous design of the photobooth.  Another thing from this chapter that I thought was interesting was that the software company Olivetti hired so many distinguished designers and let them have creative freedom.  I think one of the most important things when designing software is uniformity which is one thing Olivetti lacked.  In chapter 8 I really liked reading about the subway systems.  They talked about so many things that were incorporated into the systems that I had never really thought of before like, the colors used to identify each train line and the different signage used to make things more clear.

Chapters 4-6 were a good and informative read, though slow at times.  I really like how each chapter was on a different field of design (Industrial, Visual Communications, and Interior).  Chapter 4 was about industrial design.  I thought it was interesting how product designers of kitchen utensils started to make things more attractive than functional.  I thought the metaphor that Dieter Rams used was very interesting.  It is interesting to think about what is expected of products now compared to earlier on; it used to be just about functionality, now a product must have both good form and function.  In the chapter about interior design I thought it was interesting that it focused a lot on resiential design instead of commercial, which I thought was very interesting since I have always been taught that interior decorators designs the inside of a home, not interior designers.

Eva Zeisel is an industrial designer who designs mainly dinnerware.  She is originally from Budapest but she came to the United States after she was released from a prison oversees to settle down with her husband.  She is considered a premier industrial designer of the 20th century.  She started the Ceramic Arts Industrial Design Department at the Pratt Institute.  She designed a series of China dinnerware for Sears Roebuck, Castleton China, Federal Glass, and Phillip Rosenthal.  She recieved many awards including Honorary Doctorates from the Parsons School in New York and the Royal College of the Arts in London, and in 2002 she won the Russel Wright Award for Design Excellence.  She was also known for giving her dinnerware an interesting shape.  Instead of using the traditional round shape for a dinner plate she would give the plate a slightly oval shape to make it more interesting.  A lot of her ceramic arts and dinnerware had a very fuild shape to it making it very innovative for the time it was designed.

Karim Rashid is a designer who has worked in fields of design including Interior, Industrial, and Visual Communications in over 35 countries.   He has designed the interiors of hotels, bars, retail spaces, and homes.  He also designs furniture and many types of technology.   He has created products for companies such as Disney, TIMEX, Samsung, Ralph Lauren, Toyota, Unilever, Method Home, Artbox, and Audi, to name a few.
As well as designing, he lectures at colleges all over the United States.  He has also been featured in publications such as Time, and NY Times.
Karim Rashid has won many coveted awards in the design world.  He was named Interior Design Magazine’s annual design review winner in 2010, won an IF award for an Asus computer design in 2011, an IDSA industrial Design award in 2010, and a Best of the Year Award in 2010 for hus design for a small healthcare practice.  In 2001 he won many awards from IDSA for furniture design.  In 2005, he won the best products of the year award by Time magazine.
I really enjoy his designs for the colors and the abstract shapes he uses.  He uses very bold colors usually in contrast with white or another very light color.  The spaces he creates all function well and have a wonderful atmosphere and look to them.  The furniture he creates has very curvy lines and contrasting colors as well.
At such a young age, Rashid has already had a significant impact on the design world.  It will be exciting to see what he has in store.  I think he will become a very influential designer in years to come.

Class on January 19 was very good.  I enjoyed the presentation on the design process.  I felt it was really informative and thought it was interesting how every type of design uses the same basic process.  I also thought it was interesting how each project a designer does can have a slightly different design process.  I think this is going to help in a lot of aspects of my first year in Interior Design ( I had in interview on Friday, so that is assuming I get it).  I also enjoyed seeing The Deep Dive again.  I saw this once in a CADD class I had in High School and didn't pay much attention.  This time I actually took a lot away from it.  I realized that not every work environment has to be very formal to get things done effeciently.  It was interesting to see how Ideo used the design process we talked about in class.  They all knew exactly what to do in order to achieve a good result.  It worked out for them in the end even though the whole process seemed very informal.  I think watching videos is a very good way to get a point across!

The last class we had, on Wednesday the 12th was a really good class.  In the beginning of class you said that the lecture would be one of the most boring.  I thought it was really interesting.  I loved hearing all about the different chair styles and the different things each field of design can do.  If this class was supposed to be boring, I can't wait to hear the rest of the lectures.  I really like this class so far!

This is a Longanerger basket I found in my house.  I found this basket pattern very interesting because of its longer pieces.  I also like the contrast of the green band in the center with the natural wood of the basket.

This is the tile on my kitchen floor.  I thought that it was a perfect pattern to show for this assignment, even though it may not be the most creative.

This pattern was one of my favorites I came upon this week. The flower pattern in the middle really stood out to me.  This is a wood carving from Lithuania.  It is hanging in the hallway of my house.

This is a caned chair that was my great grandmothers.  It is in my grandparents house and I think the intricate design is very cool.  I always have looked at it as a part of the chair but I think it stands out very well on its own.

This is a sweater pattern on a pair of boots my friend was wearing this week.  I was trying to find interesting patterns that I could photograph.  In my opinion this looks very cool when you get very close to it.

This is the kitchen table at my house.  Normally when you think of wood there is not a consistent pattern.  When I started to take a closer look at the table I notice a couple small sections of the table.  In my opinion this is a natural pattern.

Bricks are a pretty typical pattern.  These are the bricks on the hearth of my fireplace.  Even thought it is not really part of the pattern, the worn out look of the bricks is what drew me to photograph this pattern.

This is a bag I found at a store in Worthington.  I really love the pattern on it.  I also like all of the colors together.  I think the swirl patten gives it a lot of visual interest as well.

This is a roll of paper towels.  I think this is an interesting place to find a pattern. You would not normally think of a paper towel roll when you think of a pattern.  I chose this because it is an unusual place to find a pattern.

This pattern is my favorite one that I found.  Finding this pattern on something not man made makes it a lot more interesting.  I was instantly drawn to this when I saw it.

The first couple chapters of Design: A very short introduction are very interesting.  They get into some explanations of design someone would not normally think of.  The first thing I actually saw in the book was a typo.  The first sentence of the first chapter!  That doesn't take away from the good information in the book though.  I enjoyed reading about the different ways they had to adapt the refrigerators for the different areas of Europe.  I also found it interesting the way that the toothpaste companies had to change their advertising in order to be sucessful in different countries.  Overall this reading was really good. It was good basic design information that I think everyone should know.

The article I read was about a new art installation in Frankfurt, Germany.  It was designed by SOFTlab as part of the NODE festival.  It is a funnel shaped piece of art made with pieces of red, white, and silver very reflective plastic.  It is 3 stories high and also extends into the floor.

The reason I decided to read this article is because I saw the photo of the installation. I think abstract design is starting to be used a lot more in the design industry. It caught my eye right away.  I gained a new respect for different types of art.  I think that this would be a cool article for a lot of people to read.  I think reading about the NODE festival would be interesting to a lot of people.

I am trying to get into the Interior Space Design program and, this is one of the required courses for that major.  I would like to major in Interior Space Design. I am very much looking forward to all of the projects we are going to do.  I had a couple friends in this class last quarter and they really enjoyed it.  I have no concerns about this course, I have heard its great!

Hi! My name is Jennifer Wheat, you can call me Jenny.  I have lived on the same street (I moved 2 houses down when I was four) in Columbus, Ohio my entire life.  I graduated from High School last year.  I decided on OSU because of their Design program.  I have always wanted to do some kind of design and decided that Interior Space Design was what I wanted to pursue.  Besides being interested in Design I have some other interests.  I love photography, and I also Scuba Dive! This has recently become one of my favorite things to do.  I went on a Carribean cruise this summer and went diving there.  The coral reef was one of the most breathtaking things I have ever seen.  I hope to get to know you all!
