I thought Design 200 was a really good course. I enojoyed all of the projects we did and I liked getting to see each ones purpose in design. I liked getting to learn a little bit about each one of the design majors and how they all work together. I thought the blogging was a very different way of teaching, but I really liked it. I liked being able to look at other peoples to see how they were liking the course and things like that. The one thing I wish we did more of was talk about the books we read. I wish we could have had more time to discuss the topics in these books.
Overall I thought it was great! Thanks!

Our project turned out really well in the end. I think our product turned out to be a pretty solid idea and that it was recieved pretty well by the class. We all met before presentation day to go over everything and to make sure we each knew what we were doing. Our team worked really well together. We did a good job organizing times to meet outside of class and everyone did their fair share of work.
During this project everyone had equal contribution to the things we wanted incorporated into the product. I mostly worked on the kiosk design. Olivia and I came up with the concept and how we wanted it designed. Then I went and used google sketchup to make a rendering of what we wanted the final product to look like. I felt like I did a good job working with everyone else and doing my fair share of work.
Overall I really liked this project. It was good to be working in a group because that is how it really is in the design world. I also liked seeing how product design, visual communications, and interior design can all come into play in a project and how everything ended up.

We have been working a lot on the finalization of things for our product. We have made final decisions on the logo design, and the kiosk design. We are doing really well with our organization and we are working very well with each other.
So far during the project I have been mostly involved with the kiosk design. I made a model of the kiosk design on Google Sketchup. I feel as if everyone in my group has been doing an equal amount of work on this project. I think since our group is doing very well together we are making very good progress. We have been making times to meet outside of class to work on our project. I feel like we are in a really good spot right now.

We have been working on an idea for storage in the entry/ mudroom of a house. We have come up with the basic final design and are making some more modifications before we finalize it. Our team has been working really well together. We had to end up splitting the tasks into groups because of everyone’s schedules. I think it is working out really well
Everyone in our entire group has been contributing to the final design. I have been looking at ideas for the kiosk we will be using. The group doing the kiosk has not met up yet, but we are going to on Monday before or after class to finish that up. Either Matt or I will be doing the final rendering of the kiosk. I feel as if everyone in the group is doing really well with doing their part.

The last two chapters of Design: A very short introduction were really good. I thought it was very interesting to hear about design in Japan and their industry. I also thought it was interesting that a lot of large design companies were established at first to make one specific product and then gradually branched out. In this last section of the reading I also thought a lot about how design is sometimes thought of something that is new, not always universal to everyone, and can be very expensive but the book talked about how there is now a whole new market for design that designs things for third world countries in order to help them out. I thought this was something that is very important.

The last three chapters of Cradle to Cradle were really interesting. I enjoyed this a lot better because it started to get more into design along with eco-effeciency. One of the things I thought was most interesting that the writers talked about was the reuse of all materials used in cars. Making car fabric out of biodegradeable material and when disposing of the frames of the car they seperate all of the types of metal to be able to reuse them.
These last chapters made me think a lot about the future of our world. In movies they make the future of the world seem very technology oriented with very high tech cars somewhere in space. I believe our future world will be focused on eco-efficiency and trying to make our planet a better place. I believe many things talked about in the book will be incorporated into our everyday lives making the world a safer and better place for us to live.

Class on monday was pretty good. It was cool to see where other people that went through the program are now. I wish we could have heard from people from other majors other than just Industrial Design though. I like that they brought their own slideshow full of projects they did while they were in school. I also thought the marshmellow game was very interesting. I was sitting around a group of people I had never really talked to before in the class. I enjoyed seeing the group dynamics when we were pushed together all of a sudden.
The movies we watched on wednesday were really cool. I learned a lot about Charles and Ray Eames that I had never known before. I was not aware that they made all of those short movies. I also think it's very cool that they made medical equipment for the military out of their new and innovative material. I can imagine they never thought the material they originally intended for use in furniture would be used in medical equipment.

These three chapters from Cradle to Cradle were not what I expected when reading this book. I was expecting a lot more talk of what materials are better to use in certian situations and why. Instead it was a lot of talk about the environment in general. It talks a lot about agriculture in the first chapter and why it needs to be done a certain way to keep a healthy environment. I did not feel this was entirely neccesary to the book. I did think chapter three was very interesting though. I enjoyed the part where the authors talked about an environmentally friendly buidling made by people and one made by a cherry tree. I thought this was a very interesting approach to the different ways you could design an efficient building. I hope the rest of the book gets more into the actual design aspect of being environmentally friendly.

J06: Design and the Environment
Design and the Environment
When I think of design and the environment I think of sustainable or green design. These types of design are both important because they work on trying to do design in a way that is not only more environmentally friendly, but they are more friendly and healthy for the user. In the lecture about design and the environment we talked a lot about materials and ways to design that are more environmentally friendly and why. I think that environmentally friendly design is very inportant to every field of design because it improves products and the way they are used by the consumers.
Understanding indoor air quality
This article from the American Society for Interior Designers (ASID) was about indoor air quality. Indoor air quality is crucial to the health of the inhabitants of the space. It can be affected by many things like building materials, fabric types, furniture materials, and painting materials. It also talks about the many types of pollutants that these can give off and why they are harmful. As well as talking about the places these pollutants can come from, it gives alternatives to use rather than the normal materials. It has a lot of important information on making an indoor environment more healthy for everyone that uses the space.
The Designers Accord
This article from business week is about a woman named Valerie Casey who is an employee of IDEO. It explains how she, along with Tim Brown (the CEO of IDEO), and Paul Hawken, came up an organization called the Designers Accord. The Designers Accord is a group of people that focus on green design. They are setting out to change the practice of design all over the world. Companies will be able to sign up to be in the Designers Accord if they want to fully commit to doing sustainable design. The Designers Accord is trying to make it so sustainable design is practiced in every single place design is done.
Sustainable Design saves more than the environment
This article by the Washington Post is about the things other than the environment that can be saved by practicing sustainable design. It talks about LEED (Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design) and the ways they are trying to improve their practices of green design. It also talks about the ways that they are trying to change their design to accommodate new more sustainable materials. In order to use less material and so they are able to use safer materials they are trying to make more compact designs.
Green labeling program by the USDA
This article is about new labeling standards for products that contain renewable resources. If a product contains at least 25% of renewable resources it will be labeled USDA-certified biobased. This new development by the USDA is very important for design engineers who now have a guideline for validity of products. It will also help consumers who are trying to use more green materials.
Contradictions of Sustainable design
This video on youtube is an interview of editors of metropolis magazine, treehugger.com , and core77.com which are all design publications. In this interview they talk about the many contradictions of sustainable design. They talk about many issues such as reducing consumption, and what materials really are more sustainable. They also talk a lot about how important it is to promote sustainability.

I really enjoyed both classes this week. The lecture on Monday was slightly boring but I thought it was important to learn. The lecture on its own would probably not have stuck in my mind but having the movie to watch along with it was very helpful. I also just thought it was a very interesting topic of discussion. I think that the discussion at the end of the day on Wednesday was really good also. Although I did not speak up and give my opinion, I thought it was really good to hear other peoples. I am glad we got an opportunity to do this in such a big class. Some uninteresting information was made very cool by the way it was presented in class.

The introduction of Cradle to Cradle was really interesting. It made me think a lot about the products I use every day and how they could be affecting me. Every day objects like computers, cell phones and the furniture we sit on can be harming us. I also thought the background information on both of the authors was important for setting up the book. If these authors were not accredited in their fields then the in depth information in the book would not be taken seriously. I am excited to read the rest of the book!

This week was a crazy week! So much snow and ice.
I really enjoyed learning about color theory on monday. I think it is so interesting that just by using a certain color or combination of colors you can alter the whole feeling of something and affect the mood of the person using it. I am really looking forward to taking color theory next quarter because I have to take it for the major. I got in the the Interior Space Design Program! I am really looking forward to learing more about color in interior spaces in particular.
Wednesday was an interesting day. I fell on the ice right on my tail bone, it was very painful and I could not sit all day! It was very embarassing. Needless to say, I did not feel like I could sit still in class so I did not go. I looked through all of the videos and the slideshow though. My favorite thing in the material for wednesday was the slideshow on green design. My dad is an architect and a member of LEED so I know a little bit about it. I think green design is very crucial to any field of design. Green products are meant to give no harm to the user and usually does not require anything extra to be operated. Design is supposed to be accesible and easy to use for everyone so making these designs green only makes them better. I wish I would have been at class!

Clue 1: Barcelona Chair, desgined by Mies Van der Rohe, it was designed for the german pavilion for the International Exposition of 1929
Clue 2: This is the Red and Blue chair by Garrit Rietveld, it was originally designed to be black, white and gray but was later changed to primary colors to mimic Piet Mondrians paintings. I am reading Azure architecture magazine.
Clue 3: The Wexner Center by Peter Eisenman, I learned that the building had to have repairs only a few years after it was built due to a leaking roof. The building was not designed to keep water out very well.
Clue 4: The math tower by Philip Johnson, the architectural detail that I thought was interesting was the tile surrounding the massive arch around the entrance
Clue 5: The Thompson library, The library has been expanded and renovated 3 times since it was first built in 1910 by architects Allen and Collins
